THE TOWN OF CLONAKILTY Clonakilty is just 13 miles west of Bandon along the N71. The centre of the town is attractive with store fronts mostly painted in bright colours and masses of floral displays in the summer months. The town is a popular tourist destination. Visitors go to the nearby beaches as Inchydoney or visit local attractions such as The West Cork Model Railway Village, Lisselan Gardens and nine hole golf course and the Michael Collins Centre. Lisselan gardens was laid out by the Bence Jones family in the mid 1800s to take advantage of the natural features provided by the surrounding valley and the Argideen river. The rock garden and Azalea garden below the house contain a wide variety of unusual plants. The nine hole golf course was formed in 2004. The course includes features such as a railcar from green to tee on two holes and taking a ferry across the Argideen river on another hole. The estate is also home to Imperial Call, a 1996 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner. The town became Ireland's first ever official fair trade town. It has also won several awards in Ireland's tidy town competition. Clonakilty has always been well known for its music, both traditional and contemporary and the bars hold live events throughout the year. Famous acts like the folk legend Christy Moore have played regularly in the town. Clonakilty Black Pudding is world renowned though nowadays is not produced locally.
