THE TOWN OF BANDON Bandon is a thriving town in County Cork, just 16 miles west of Cork City and international airport. It lies on the river Bandon and celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2004. It has deep historical roots which began in Elizabethan times (circa 1588) when over 40,000 acres of land belonging to the O'Mahonys was allotted to English settlers as part of the Plantations of Ireland. During the nineteenth century Bandon grew as a leading industrial centre which included brewing, tanning, distilling, corn and cotton milling. Today it is a thriving business centre partly due to its proximity to Cork City. The town is often referred to as the gateway to West Cork. Services include banks, boutiques, hardware stores, numerous cafes and restaurants, delicatessans, pubs and a local book shop. The Bandon river is well known for its salmon fishing and salmon can sometimes be seen jumping from the weir. The local Bandon Anglers Association has a stocking policy to help maintain and improve the fishing. Brown trout and sea trout can also be fished. When the West Cork Railway closed in 1961 the tracks were lifted and the route of the line was left derelict. Part of this route on the outskirts of Bandon has now been reclaimed and is a very popular walk especially with local people. Being just 6 miles as the crow flies from the sea, there are a host of beautiful inlets and beaches all within a 15 mile radius, Dunworley being perhaps the most popular swimming beach with the local residents of Bandon. |
