CORK CITY

Just 20 miles from Bandon, Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland and the third most populated city after Dublin and Belfast.  It is situated on the River Lee.  Cork Harbour is the world's second largest harbour after Sydney, Australia.  The city was founded in the 6th century by St Finbarr and the title Mayor of Cork was established by royal charter in 1318.  Over the centuries the city was attacked by Vikings and Norsemen.  The city, like the town of Bandon, was once fully walled and several of the old city wall sections still remain.

Patricks Street is the main street and has been recently remodelled.  The adjacent Grand Parade is a tree lined avenue, home to the tourist office.  The famous English Market has entrances on Princes Street, Patricks Street and Grand Parade and is definitely not to be missed.  Its origins can be traced back to the 1600s though the present building was erected in the 1700s.  The display of fresh fish in the market is a sight to behold as is the array of fruits, vegetables, breads, olives etc.  The market is open from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5.30pm.

Saint Finbarre's cathedral was built in the 1870s on a site of christian worship since the 6th century.

University College Cork was founded in 1845 as Queen's College and is situated off the Western Road.  The buildings are styled after the tudor gothic period.  There are over 17,000 students of which over 14,000 are undergraduates.  In the grounds of the university is the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, a public art gallery opened in 2005

Overlooking the city is the Butter Museum and Shandon. Cork Butter Market became the largest butter market in the world in the 1700s and was once Ireland's most important food export.  The Museum is located in the historic area of Shandon, next to the church of St Anne where you can play the famous bells of Shandon.
